Article summary

The annotation feature on Skydeck is designed to provide a robust toolset to enhance your interaction with the visualized data. With annotations, you can easily demarcate and highlight objects, assign observation severities and quickly perform measurements on datasets. Created annotations can also be conveniently grouped into user-defined categories and exported for seamless use beyond the Skydeck platform.

On SkyDeck you can add annotations in the form of:

Annotating Points

Annotating points involves marking a specific point on the map.

  1. In the sidebar on the right side of the map area, click the point icon and then click the map where you want to place the annotation.

A temporary marker is placed on the map and a pop-up for the annotation opens displaying the latitude and longitude of that point on the map.

  1. Click Save as Annotation. The pop-up expands displaying more options.

Saving the Point Annotation

The following options are available here:

Option

Description

Name

Enter the name for the marker.

By default, the name of every new point annotation will be displayed as Marker 'n'.

Description

Describe the purpose for this annotation.

Annotation Group

Select the group under which you want to group this annotation.

Attach Image

Attach an image associated with the annotation. This could be a building or an object that you want to highlight on the map.

This is a defect

Select this checkbox if you want to mark this spot on the map as a defect. A defect could either be fault at that location or a defect in the 2D data that you are visualizing.

Severity

Mark the severity of the annotation where 1 denotes low severity and 5 denotes high severity.

This option is displayed only when you select the This is a defect checkbox.

Click Save. The annotation is saved and displays the pixel information for the selected layer.

For example, if the selected layer is a surface model, the pixel info displays the elevation at the point annotation.

  1. To rename the annotation and modify other attributes, click on the annotation, click the three dot icon in the pop-up and then click Edit.

Editing the Point Annotation

The expanded pop-up is displayed, allowing you to edit, delete and remove the image (if attached) from the annotation.

You can only delete saved annotations. Any annotation marked on the map and not saved disappears when you reload the page. However, this will reload all the layers, overlays and annotation on the map even if you had hidden them earlier.

  1. To delete the annotation, click on the annotation, click the three dot icon in the pop-up, click Delete and then click Delete Annotation.

Attaching Images to Point Annotations

  1. Click on the marker to which you want to attach the image.

  2. In the pop-up that is displayed, click Attach Image.

  1. Browse for the image file and upload it.

Ensure that the file uploaded is in JPG, JPEG, PNG or HEIC format and does not exceed 10MB in size.

  1. To view the uploaded image, click the marker and then click the expand icon on the image.

The expanded image is displayed with an option to zoom in and zoom out.

  1. To remove the image, click the three dot icon and then click Remove Image.

Annotating Lines

Annotating lines involves marking a line on the map. This line need not be a straight line and can connect multiple points on the map.

  1. In the sidebar on the right side of the map area, click the line icon and then click on the map where you want to start marking the line.

  1. To make a straight line connecting two points on the map, drag your mouse to the second point on the map and double-click. A dotted line connecting the two points is displayed and a pop-up for this line annotation opens, displaying the length of the line (in meters).

  1. To mark a line annotation connecting multiple points, click on the map where you want to start making the line, then click other points till you reach the last point, and then double-click. A dotted line connecting all the points is displayed and a pop-up for this line annotation opens, displaying the total length of the line (in meters).

  1. Click Save as Annotation. The pop-up expands displaying more options.

Annotating Polygons

Annotating polygons involves marking a polygon shape on the map.

  1. In the sidebar on the right side of the map area, click the polygon icon and then click the map where you want to start marking the polygon. A blue dot appears next to your cursor.

  1. On the map, click the starting point of the polygon.

  2. Move your cursor to the next point of the polygon and click to define one edge of the polygon.

    This is displayed as a blue line on the map.

  3. Repeat step 3, as needed, to draw all sides of the polygon.

  4. When you reach the last point, double-click to complete the polygon. A dotted line connecting all the points of the polygon is displayed on the screen and a pop-up for this polygon annotation opens, displaying the area and perimeter of the polygon.

Annotation Groups

Logical categories of annotations can be created by placing similar annotations in one group. For example, you can group all line annotations together under one group, or group annotations for similar structures such as vehicles, trees, buildings and so on.

  1. In the sidebar, on the left side of the map area, click the Annotations icon. The Annotations panel displays the UNGROUPED tab by default.

Grouping Annotations

You can download all ungrouped annotations in CSV format by clicking Download all ungrouped Annotations (CSV).

  1. To create an annotation group, click the GROUPED tab and then click Add annotation group.

  1. Enter the name of the annotation group, select the color to associate with the group and click the green tick mark.

Customizing the Annotation Group

Option

Description

Edit

Allows you to edit the name of the annotation group and change colour associated with the group.

Export (CSV)

Allows you to download the grouped annotations in the CSV format.

Delete

Allows you to delete the annotation group.

To download all the grouped and ungrouped annotations, click the document icon.
